A council tax question? |
my mum is 61 and gets a small state pension and pension credit. my younger brother lives with her and he will be 18 in 2 weeks. on his 18th birthday he will receive about 拢40000 from a trust fund. he has just finished college and works part time at Sainsbury's. about 12 hours a week. he is no longer going to be in full time education. until now my mum has claimed full housing and council tax benefit. she also receives the 25% discount as being the only adult. what will happen now as regards to her liability for council tax and the fact that my brother will now have 拢40000 as savings. he will still be living with her so i gather as he is now classed as an adult she will lose the 25% discount and all the benefit and that he is now liable for paying the rent and council tax. many thanks for any help you can give I think you have answered your own question, you are right on all points Council tax yes but if the house is rented in your mums name I am sure that her rent exemption will still stand. hiya your lil bro will be expected to pay the rent and council tax ect. him having that amount of money may also affect her pension i suggest he hides it in an account not in either of their name that way it shouldnt stop her pensoin or discount from council tax sounds like you allready know the answer the best thing he could do is move out or at least not live under the same roof for five nights a week or the full liability will be on your mother though she should be charging him his cost nothings free in this world She will lose the 25% discount for sure. Dont mention the money to anyone cos believe me they will take that into account knowing the robbing b*stards. Hi best advice do what other people do say nothing just get your mum to say that he only stays twice a week |
