What are private equity companies?

I am not fiancially aware at all, I have just heard the term private equity companies mentioned a lot in the news recently and I dont understand what they do? could someone, in simple language tell me please? thanks

Private companies do not have publicly traded stocks. For example, your local dog grooming shop.

Private equity companies, generally, are part owners of private companies. However, they can also invest in what ever they want.

Lots of people on this board want to get "private equity" , that is. find a guy who will just give them money without a lot of hassle.

You get a more direct answer by asking a question that relates to what you personally, want or need.

They are companies which raise money for capital infusion.. Just like an investment bank.
