The best (liquid) place to Invest 拢100,000 in the UK today???

Equities? Bonds? Short Term Deposits? Gold?

What is the low risk / steady return option?
What is the high risk / high return option?

Is it better to protect your capital?
Is it better to go fixed rate?

Should you split it between spouses in different accounts?

The figure is hypothetical, but I think it's an appropriate one to search for the optimal investment in today's economy?

Please try to justify your answer with sources or just by mentioning how you know what you say?

Thanks

Gold seems to be doing pretty well at the moment. Historically, as oil prices have gone up, so has gold. And it seems unlikely that oil prices will go down much.
I'm not a financial advisor, but i would have thought that splitting the investment between spouses would be a good idea. That way, if your investments make money, you have twice the Capital Gains Tax allowance. (拢9200 per annum each for this financial year)
