What is needed to start a bookstore?

used and new books. I am aware I need a building and some startup capital.

Go to http://www.score.org/index.html and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information in the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor to discuss starting a bookstore.

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE has 389 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors.

Primarily, one needs knowledge on how to run a business. A simple interest in books is not nearly enough.

Even better, knowledge on how to run a bookstore. Where do you get your inventory? How much should you expect to pay? What form of contract between you and your suppliers? What is your local market?

Location. Location. Location

etc.

City licensing and a checkup of the building (if it's rented you're still responsible for some of it). Check with the CityClerk about that. And I'd schedule a meeting with your local SBA or SCORE office so they can guide you through a start-up.
