Investment returns are usually considered as Compound returns.
If you consider PV = present Value, IV = Invested value, rate of return = r and num of years = n

for compound of interest the formula is
IV(1+r)^n = PV

Here
IV = 1000
PV = 5000
n = 20
r =?
1000(1+r)^20 = 5000
after solving this, you would get r = 0.0838
or annual rate of return is 8.38%
Hence you had received 8.38% annual return on your initial investment.
