I just opened a Roth IRA with 4Gs. What type of investments can I invest in? Can I buy stocks?

A Roth IRA is a tax protection mechinism. Under the guidelines of the Roth IRA you can buy any investment.

Because a Roth IRA usually is set up to pay out tax free at retirement, its a good idea to have a long term perspective (30-40 years) to your investments. If you do buy individual stocks you'll want to actively manage them so that you don't waste your Roth IRA assets on a looser investment.

If you are young invest in riskier annuities. Your young you can make up for losses because time is on your side if they occur on your portfolio. always diversify (small cap, Fortune 1000/Blue chip, emerging markets, tech sector etc...) Get advice from a professional but most importantly keep up the investing and enjoy having a nest egg. It's the best gift you can give yourself.

The easiest thing to do is diversify across several different mutual funds. Large cap growth, value, small-cap, and international. You want to research the funds at Morningstar.com or screen them at Yahoo. Some favorites of mine are Fidelity Value, Fidelity Contrafund, Royce Low-Priced Stock Fund and T Rowe Price Capital Appreciation.
