as stock market ( eg. New York Stock Exchange) is a place where you trade or exchange stock certificates.Certificates which indicates how much part of a certain business you own expressed in the number of shares with corresponding monetary values per share. The total shares comprised the whole equity of the business and you just "share" a part of it.

Say, if you buy a certain share at 100 and the stock market price is 120. you gain 20 obviously.

Your 100 was your investment and the 20 your profit. If you borrow(debt) say 50 it means that you have owed or "debt" someone 50 and the 50 from your own "equity" or pocket to invest the total of 100.
