If you're looking for stocks to buy and hold for a long time, look for stocks you think will go up in the future. You can base your choices on "fundamental analysis" by reading up on the financial statements of a specific company you're interested in, and you can also take a look at the broader market to try to get a sense of what markets and sectors might be going up in the future. Is Apple a solid company that will make returns on your money? Are metal mining companies going up in the future and if so, would they be good to invest in? These are good things to look into, to get you started.
