What are ventures capitalists and how much entrepreneurial experience and education do they usually have?

Venture capitalists are people / companies that invest in fledgling companies who have very limited options for raising capital. The venture capitalist will provide cash for the young company(s) in exchange for shares of stock and/or promise of other future privileges or remuneration. If the young company becomes successful, the venture capitalist usually makes a great return on investment. But there is significant risk that the young company will never get their product to market, or be able to translate their concepts or research into viable products, or will in any one of many other ways fail - in which case the venture capitalist has lost most or all of their investment.

While a significant amount (years upon years) of experience and/or education is usually present in a venture capitalist, it is not a prerequisite. However, they must have achieved something(s) to get to the position of being a venture capitalist, so whatever qualities they have significant success must be one of them.

I'd sure like to find out who one real, live venture capitalist is. They're an urban legend.
