Venture capitalists for an invention idea?

I have a great idea. I also majored in Engineering so I know that the fundementals are sound. I am sure that this would be very well recepted- great market appeal. I don't have 10k to spend on lawyers and the process so can anyone suggest an alternative route that I can try that might involve Venture Capitalists?

If my past = my future, many of my documented "ideas" which I did not patent, were picked up by others and exist today. This is my best idea yet.

Venture investors are unlikely to fund 'ideas' -- ideas are plentiful. I you think you have a great idea (one that can make money), do a prototype, get the patent, do the test marketing, and write a business plan. Then talk to the angels.
